Iguaza Falls

Time to visit the Argentine side of the Cataratas do Iguazu.

Most people say the Argentine side is best, because you get to be much closer and really feel the power. We chose to take the speedboat trip into the falls and get REALLY close. It was a hot day which was just as well as we got soaked.

It was also our first expierence of Argentina at holiday time (Jan-Feb) which means its difficult trying to get accomodation and transport. It would have taken us 5 days just waiting for a bus to leave headed for Buenos Aires if it was not for the fact that we managed to get a flight out using southern winds.

Buenos Aires

Fantastic archeticutre and a wonderful multicultural lifestyle.

A good place to party (but expect to adjust your body clock significantly as most things dont even start until after midnight) and plenty of cultural things to see.

Mar Del Plata

The party town. Attracts surf competions and top international DJs. Evelyn's friend Natalia's family home town.

Ushuaia

The worlds most southerly town. We took a trip to see the penguins and seals.

El Calafate

A good base for some trekking and glacier watching.

We managed to get a LADE (much cheaper than Aerolinas Argentinas) to the Airport at El Calafate and got a taxi into town.

Finding accomodation in high season was once more a problem.

The most popular glacier to go and visit is the Moreno glacier, but we headed off on a trip to see the largest, Upsala.

El Chalten

Home of the famous Fitz Roy mountain. An impressive challenge to world class climbers, though it remained shrouded in cloud on our several attempts to see it.

We ended up in the last hostel in town and managed to get a double room. The next day we were told it was fully booked, but we were in luck, we could have the floor upstairs (currently a building site) for 15 pesos each (3 quid). I wanted to go walking and did not want to spend another 2 hours searching for accomodation. So off we went to (attempt to) see Fitz Roy.

On return we managed to get into a shared room, our first real shared hostel stay.

We had a bus trip back to El Calafate on the day of our outward flight to Bariloche, fortunately the El Chalten bus dropped us at the airport saving us 28 pesos (5.50 quid) for the taxi.

Bariloche

The beautiful lake district area.

Angostura

We had to get accomodation 8km from the centre of the town. The place had only been open for 22days but it was beautiful and the staff friendly.

We hired a car and visited the route of the seven lakes. We went to San Martin and forward booked bus rides and accomodation to see us until we leave Argentina. A great relief.

Mendoza

Famous for the magnificent wine produced in this.

We took a wine tour to the home of Santa Julia winery. (familiazuccardi.com). We were led around the winery and then through the vineyards to a have a fantastic meal accompanied by good wine.

We went to watch Boca Juniors vs River Plate (1-3) 4th Feb in a friendly game. The kick off was not until just after 2200, proving once again the Argentinians are on a different time scale to those of the UK. It was only a friendly game but was great to watch and be part of, particualrly the crowd bouncing (everyone in the crowd jumps up and down as if on a pogo stick, the overall effect looks like really good, a sea of excstatic fans).
